I'd like to introduce you to my latest work which is making it's debut this morning at Lell's Cafe. The ongoing series is titled Ebenezer Sunrise.

Last November I began realizing the early eastern sky from my bedroom window. With every awakening I took a photograph, and for most of the cold months this practice led me into days. This series work is about the threshold of a day, the departure of a yesterday, time, grace, the thrill in steeping loose leaf earl grey (that good stuff I gathered from Arizona), the regular but never uneventful low fat apple cinnamon granola and honey over plain cream top yogurt, and the scriptures caching in my core. If you're wondering about the title, I live on Ebenezer Avenue. Consider also the meaning of the word, stone of help. The colder months are over now and my mornings look much different. I still rise delivered (in Christ that is).

My new creating instrument. I came upon it at a flea market last Saturday, bought it for a dollar and had a wonderful conversation with the man who once shot with it. I'd like to go back to him and further that conversation, and hopefully give him a few prints (if I can get my hands on some polaroid film).

Finished with school, back from Europe and anxious to make new work. However, my studio is in boxes all over my basement and sun porch. So until I move into an official working space it's contour sketches and small sculptures for me. Earlier this week Jill and I had an opportunity to work on some signage for Stephen and Erica's wedding.

I began fabricating these little sculptures a few months ago when I started working with wax. They're made up of polymer lift scraps, wrappers and miscellaneous found objects. They're formed inside of plastic containers with melted wax. I coat them with a polyurethane to give them a confident seal and luster. Expect to see more of these soon. I'm excited about their potential.

Behind the glass performance piece

Last month I collaborated with some musicians from my church and did a polymer lift performance. I responded to the sounds of live music while reflecting on the crucifixion and resurrection of my Lord Jesus Christ. The image didn't turn out as well as I had hoped it would, but the experience was quite amazing and I loved working with the band members. I plan to work back into the image once I pull it from the glass. Go here to watch the performance.

Polymer lifts procedure

1. Matte medium gel by the globs, on top of a piece of glass.
Paint (and sometimes collage) on top of the dry matte medium gel. Image can be watched from other side of the glass.

2. A detail of above.

3. When the painting is finished and completely dry, another glob of matte medium goes down...

4. ... and then cheese cloth.

5. ... and then a piece of paper or canvas.
The next day I lift up the paper or canvas and everything comes up with it.

3. I drew the object and cut it out.

4. There it goes, into the projector.

These are my box paintings. I'm working on six of them. Each box has three sides, and the spaces left open are so that the viewer can see inside the box. Now, the inside and the outside should communicate with one another (that's something I'm working on). Each of the three sides is painted (casted) with different materials. (Note: the encouragement for this class was to fuse sculpture and painting). The different materials include: shavings of crayons, candles, and lumber crayons | dry cereal | dry pigment | water putty (similar to wood putty) | plaster | wax | found objects | wood chips | sand | wood glue | etc. I really enjoyed making these boxes. The wooden frame is walnut. It's normally an expensive kind of wood, but fortunately I inherited it through the wood shop without cost - someone had donated it! Building the wooden frame takes more time and effort to do than the casting. It's a huge part of the process... It includes lots of cutting, sanding and measuring. Craft is soooo important to me. If you're wondering what the completed box paintings mean, you'll have to come to my senior show or perhaps ask me about it over tea.

The boxes extend horizontally from the wall. Quite a striking effect. They're about two feet long and hover just above the viewer's head.

Color laid against the sky

So, I decided to dust off that good old Pentax film camera I laid down a year ago. Look at these balloons against the sky. Aren't they beautiful? I was driving on the interstate today and they caught my eyes. I took the next exit and labored to find them. I think they were floating above an RV park... I'm not sure, I was too distracted by their beauty. I took videos too. Spheres of color drifting in the wind. I'm so inspired, I can't contain myself. I really needed this before exams. Here are all the shoots:

They turned out really nice: all glory to Him. The wood is the head of an old golf club. Beautiful yea? The metal is copper and the blue coloring is due to an exposure to ammonia vapors (patina: chemical reaction with metal). The other materials are elastic and leather. Mostly hand stitched, a little done on a sewing machine (Jill taught me how to use one).

I'll wear them soon.
